Standing Ovation several times during Dr. Vandana Shiva's lecture at FSU last Friday evening, April 13th.  Additionally, she visited Backyard Farm.  Just a beautiful and gracious lady.
Her cause is really our cause, and it needs to be a cause for the entire planet.
Dr. Shiva was awarded Sydney, Australia's Peace Prize.  If you are unfamiliar with her work at the United Nations and elsewhere, check out her site:  http://www.vandanashiva.org/

FARM NEWS

Farmer Pam will be in Ecuador for 3 months helping to teach Permaculture at Rio Muchacho Organic Farm.  starting mid-May.  Deane will still be here tending to the farm, so it will be business as usual at the farm.

The Wild Walk and Cooking Demo conducted at Governor's Park was well attended and incredibly informative.  Scott did a wonderful job.
Thank you Scott Davis for donating your time and your wealth of knowledge with us.

The last Meet-Up at the Farm was a huge success.
We talked a lot about raising chickens and pigs, and of course, food.
  The potluck was great.
All the food was tasty and could not have blended together any better
if we had based it on a planned menu.
If you would like to hold a meet-up at the farm, please contact us.

Backyard Farm will not conduct regularly scheduled
Monthly Organic Gardening Workshops to the public for the rest of this year, however, we will be on
New Leaf Market's Farm Tour, our 4th year, on October 20, and 21, 2012.

We are still offering private workshops and consultations for individuals and groups.

Our goal at BACKYARD FARM is to provide a pleasant, relaxing,

atmosphere where people come together to

share their love

  of gardening/farming.

The second part of this goal is for people to take a vast amount of information back home with them, and that we, in some way, have inspired them or helped them in their own gardening/farming/ranching endeavors.

The subject matter changes every month

We have discussions, lectures, question and answer periods, as well as, hands-on activities.

We cater to everyone from beginners to advanced.

At least once a year we hold gardening
classes for
children
in hopes of growing future gardeners.

We also offer free farm tours for
individuals and groups
by appointment

If you find yourself in the neighborhood and our gate is open,
please come on in.

Our food/plants are grown naturally in raised beds.
We have never put anything on our garden,
not even organic controls,

for pest control, diseases or fungal problems.

We use a supplement that has 90+ sea minerals*,
including all the major, minor and trace elements.

The garden soil continues to improve each year (this is our fourth year).
The biggest difference we have noted is its water holding capabilities.
Watering once a week for a short time in a drought is absolutely fantastic.
Plus the leaves on our veggies are bigger than we've ever seen anywhere else, and so isn't the fruit.

We believe developing our soil's content, including
micro-organisms, i.e., mychorrizal fungi, worms, bacteria, etc,
along with all the minerals a plant could want (SEA-90)
results in highly productive, disease resistant plants.

SEA-90 is an inexpensive natural fertilizer/pesticide/fungicide

that has been used in Australian agriculture for over twenty years,

and contains around 90 minerals, MAJOR, MINOR  and TRACE elements.

We discuss at all our workshops how you can re-mineralize your garden/pasture

with these sea minerals

and how for you to provide access for your pets and farm animals.

Application of this Organic, OMRI listed fertilizer results in healthier,
more nutrient dense foods with a longer shelf life.

We offer SEA-90 in:

1 pound bag is $5.00 - makes 384 gallons of foliar spray, or less if you adjust the recipe for specific plants/trees.

A 25# bag is $25.00.

 A 50# bag is $40.00

Suggested uses:  in compost -  sprinkled in your garden soil or potting mix -  broadcast around fruit or nut trees, blueberries, grapes, landscape plants  -  fertilizer for pastures  -  to provide minerals to your  livestock and/or domestic pets - as a foliar spray on vegetables and houseplants - as a pesticide and a fungicide AND

FOR TAKING A HOT RELAXING MINERAL BATH

(BE SURE TO RECYCLE THE WATER INTO YOUR GARDEN/PLANTS)

Yeah!  Now we can tell you that you can put SEA-90 in your drinking water thanks to an update by the FDA on the product.

We extend our growing season
one month in early spring and one month in late fall
by converting our raised beds to mini-greenhouses.

We plant heirloom seeds by the phases of the moon according to the O
ld Farmer's Almanac.
We companion plant and utilize crop rotation and inter-cropping techniques, as well as, seed saving for the next crop.

All of our methods are intended to preserve the life cycle of nature by developing an ecosystem in the garden.
Our goal is sustainable agriculture and nutritionally dense food with high BRIX readings which amounts to healthy, flavorful food.

Since we put in the raised beds,

we've cut our own food bill by 80%.

We believe it doesn't get any better than going to the garden to pick fresh food for dinner knowing it was not grown with
chemicals that can endanger our health.
After all, if you don't have your health, what do you have?

Our products include salad tables, boxes for seed starting,
and elevated beds for those who cannot bend over to garden, are physically or otherwise challenged.

We usually have for sale at the farm fresh, free-range chicken eggs, vegetable plants, strawberry plants, seasonal vegetables/edible flowers, and homemade jams,
along with fresh, wholesome baked goods
such as bread, muffins, cookies and everyone's favorite,
rosemary olive oil cake.

Please contact us if you don't see something you wanted,
as we may be able to assist you.

Please be sure to support your local farmers!
